Note: We're rolling the new Section design out gradually, so if you're not seeing this page, follow the Creating Courses and Sections - Genius CE & Enterprise guide instead.
Overview
The Section page is where you create or edit a Section. Its fields are organized in groups that you open and close as you work, and Genius shows which required fields are still missing before you save.
Before You Start
Required fields: Section Name, Course, Term, at least one Instructor, and any Custom Fields your organization has made required.
The Course is set once. You choose it when you create the Section, and it can't be changed later.
Set Start Date and End Date before you add meeting times. Room Assignment and the Instructor scheduling check both need them.
Create a Section
Click Add Section in the left menu (Sections > Add Section), at the top of the Sections list, or in a Course's side menu. Starting from a Course fills in the Course for you.
Fill in the required fields, then any other fields you need.
In Dates and Meeting Info, add any meeting times. See Add meeting times.
Click Save. Genius shows "Section created" and opens the Section's page.
To add Price Segments or set Quantity Registration (if your organization uses it), edit the Section. A new Section can only have a Base Price until it is saved.
Edit a Section
Open the Section from the Sections list and click Edit.
Make your changes and click Save. You stay on the edit page, and the bottom bar reads "All changes saved".
If you changed the Start Date or End Date, the new dates apply to new enrollments only. To change dates for Learners already enrolled, use Bulk Actions under Enrollments.
To archive a Section, set the Status switch next to the Section name to Archived.
Using the Section Page
Page Layout
Fields are organized in eight groups. Click a group's name to open or close it. The summary beside each name shows what is set and what is still missing, for example "Cap 30" or "Instructor not set". Fields tagged Visible to Learners appear in the catalog.
Check for Missing Fields
As you work, Genius identifies missing required fields in two places:
Group summaries: for example, "Section Name, Course and Term not set".
Bottom bar: next to Save, a count of the missing required fields and their names, for example "5 fields still needed".
If you click Save with a required field empty, Genius opens its group, marks the field, and shows "Some required fields still need a value."
Add Meeting Times
In Dates and Meeting Info, click Add a meeting time.
Choose the day (When), the Start time, and the End time.
If needed, choose a Time Zone and a Room Assignment. Time Zone defaults to your organization's time zone, and Room Assignment lists only rooms that are free at that time.
Click Add.
To remove a meeting time, click Remove on its row and confirm. It is removed when you save the Section.
Resolve an Instructor Scheduling Conflict
When you save, Genius checks whether any of the Section's Instructors already teach another Section at an overlapping time. If one does, the Instructors group opens and names each conflict. Choose a different Instructor or change the meeting time.
If your organization allows overrides and your role has permission: click Acknowledge & Save Anyway in the Scheduling Conflict window to save with the conflict.
Otherwise: the Section is not saved, and the bottom bar reads "Save is blocked by an Instructor scheduling conflict" until you make a change.
Warning: Save often. Leaving the page with unsaved changes discards them after you confirm that you want to leave. If your session times out, unsaved changes are lost without warning.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible Cause | Resolution |
"Instructor availability could not be checked. Please try again." | Genius could not run the Instructor check. | Click Save again. |
"Fix the flagged meeting times before saving:" | Some meeting times are marked Needs review (no valid day, or an end time before the start time), and you added, changed, or removed a meeting time. | Click Edit on each flagged meeting time, choose When, Start, and End again, and click Save. Then save the Section. |
"The Section was saved, but not: {part}. Save again to retry." | One part of the Section is saved in a separate step and did not go through, for example after a brief connection problem. | Click Save again. On a new Section, the message reads "The Section was created, but not: {part}. Enter it again and save." |
Base Price can't be changed. | The Section has an active Price Option. | Use Manage Price Options in the Price Options group. See Price Options (Managing Price Segments) - Genius CE & Enterprise. |
"This section is canceled. All fields are locked and cannot be changed." | The Section is canceled. | Cancellation is permanent. See Canceling Sections: Administrator Guide - Genius CE & Enterprise. |
